2014 DC McKay Stakes Nominations Released

April 22nd, 2014

A talented field of 16 has been nominated for an appearance in this weekend’s Group 3 DC McKay Stakes (1100m) on Australasian Oaks Day at Morphettville Racecourse this weekend, including in-form five-year-old Siwa Lady.

Contesting an impressive record of six wins and eight places from 21 race starts to date, Siwa Lady has arguably hit career best form over her current preparation, finishing outside the places in just one of six events and steadily building towards a current run of three consecutive victories.

Strolling home to win two minor events over 955m and 1000m respectively, the Gonski mare hit an impressive best when winning the Listed Oakbank Stakes (1100m) at last weekend’s major Oakbank Easter Racing Carnival, which interestingly drew a larger crowd than day 2 of The Championships at Royal Randwick.

Trainer Darren Weir is confident of Siwa Lady’s chances in this weekend’s Group 3, particularly if allocated a favourable gate at Wednesday’s DC McKay barrier draw.

Also included in nominations for this weekend’s 2014 DC McKay Stakes is talented local Conservatorium.

Securing five wins and five places from 25 starts so far, Conservatorium contested a particularly strong and consistent 2013 racing schedule, unlucky to finish second in both the Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) and Group 2 QTC Cup (1300m) and claiming the Group 2 Lee Steere Stakes (1400m) and Group 3 A.J. Scahill Stakes (1400m) most notably.

While disappointing when eighth in the Group 3 RN Irwin Stakes (1100m) in his only appearance this year on April 12th, trainer Gary Kennewell is confident Conservatorium’s knowledge and experience on the Morphettville track will go a long way towards victory this weekend.

Unable to match the late pace of all rivals when tenth in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) last time out, trainer Robbie Griffiths is confident a step back in class and distance is precisely what is required for talented gelding It Is Written, and has in turn included the five year old in nominations for the 2014 DC McKay Stakes.

Unlucky when third in the Group 2 Australia Stakes (1200m) on January 24th, the Written Tycoon gelding has steadily built to the task this time in; finishing fifth in the Listed Hareeba Stakes (1200m) on February 12th before winning the Listed Abell Stakes (1200m) prior to his most recent appearance.

Likely to return to the spelling paddock following this weekend’s Group 3, Griffiths is confident It Is Written experienced nothing more than an off night at Moonee Valley when contesting the William Reid Stakes, and will line up in prime condition this weekend.

A final field and barrier draw for the 2014 DC McKay Stakes is due to be released on Wednesday morning.
