2014 DC McKay Stakes Final Field and Barrier Draw

April 23rd, 2014

A less-than capacity field of 13 has been confirmed to line up for the 2014 Group 3 DC McKay Stakes (1100m) at Morphettville racecourse, and while sharing an impressive race card with two Group 1 races, is shaping as one of the most highly anticipated events of the weekend.

Contesting an impressive record of nine wins and six places from 32 race starts to date, talented journeyman Conservatorium has been confirmed in the final field for the 2014 DC McKay Stakes.

A particularly strong and consistent performer over the 2013 Australian racing calendar, Conservatorium was unlucky to finish second in the Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) and Group 2 QTC Cup (1300m) before securing a maiden preparation victory in the Listed Eye Liner Stakes (1350m) over the autumn.

Returning to spring racing in similarly impressive form, the Royal Academy gelding was unlucky when blocked for a run and fifth in the Group 1 Moir Stakes (1200m) first-up, but did manage to pick up victories via the Group 2 Waroa-Lee Steere Stakes (1400m) and Group 3 A.J. Scahill Stakes (1400m).

While yet to hit peak condition in only one appearance this time in, local trainer Gary Kennewell is confident Conservatorium can return to his winning ways in the DC McKay Stakes, particularly after receiving the ideal barrier 3.

Also included in the final field for the 2014 DC McKay Stakes is exciting Robbie Griffiths-trained gelding It Is Written.

Lining up for his 13th start this preparation alone, It Is Written has been confirmed to be partnered by regular jockey Matthew Allen at Morphettville this weekend and will leave from the ideal barrier 2.

Beating a talented field home in the Listed Testa Rossa Stakes (1200m) on September 29th, It Is Written has arguably hit peak condition over his four most recent appearances; finishing third in the Group 2 Australia Day Stakes (1200m) and winning the Listed Abell Stakes (1200m) on March 14th most notably.

Currently in a run of three consecutive victories, leading Victorian trainer Darren Weir has elected to accept a position in the final field of the DC McKay Stakes for talented mare Siwa Lady just one week after claiming the Listed Oakbank Stakes (1100m) at the Oakbank Easter Racing Carnival.

While yet to line up for any event rated higher than Listed level, the Gonski mare has more than earned her position in the DC McKay Stakes, having secured seven wins and eight places from only 22 race starts to date.

While yet to confirm who will ride his talented five-year-old this weekend, Weir is confident an equal race-low weight of 54kgs poses a great chance of success for Siwa Lady.

Interestingly figuring as the only other confirmed runner to carry winning form into the 2014 DC McKay Stakes, Anthony Freedman is confident barrier 9 will prove the ideal avenue for kiwi import Minaj this weekend.

Contesting two wins and a second in only three starts over the spring of 2013, Minaj has returned to the track in excellent condition this preparation, winning the Essendon Mazda 55 Challenge (955m) first-up, and while unable to figure when tenth in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m), returned to her winning ways in the Listed Projection Graphics Redelva Open (1050m) last time out.

Confirmed to be partnered by in-form jockey Vlad Duric, Minaj poses a legitimate chance for success in the 2014 DC McKay Stakes.
